Legal Support
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a grave and pervasive issue that encompasses any harmful act or disposition directed at an individual based on their gender. GBV can take multiple forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, economic and psychological abuse, and it disproportionately affects women and girls. Its roots are deeply embedded in gender inequality, and it remains a barrier to achieving gender equality and empowerment.
In Uganda, GBV remains a significant issue and as such the contributions of pro bono legal service providers are indispensable in the fight against gender-based violence. Their support not only affirms the rights of survivors but also strengthens the implementation of the legal framework for GBV prevention and response. They play a critical role in addressing GBV by offering free legal assistance in the form of legal information, and legal representation and providing any other legal assistance which in turn facilitates access to justice and subsidised services to survivors who might otherwise lack the financial means to access justice.
